These are available for all types of employment and voluntary positions not covered by the higher-level Disclosures. This level of Disclosure contains details of convictions considered "unspent" under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and held on the Police National Computer. This replaces the former PNC Check that was carried out at the local Police Station.
The Basic Disclosure is applied for by, and issued only to, the individual concerned. It is then the individual's choice whether they show the Disclosure to an employer. It is not job-specific and can be used more than once. When an employer or prospective employer is looking at a Basic Disclosure, they should consider the length of time between the Disclosure being obtained and the time that it is being presented and what the employee or applicant has been doing in the intervening period. Evidence should be obtained as to whereabouts of the individual on a month by month basis throughout that period. Referees should be of professional standing in the community, not related to the individual and not romantically involved with them to give the reference a high degree of credibility.
